Camp Joy Day Zero – Sunday, July 18, 2010

The Camp Joy crew met up at church at 6 A.M. Joel shared why we did not have our shirts for the SNL commissioning service. Long story short, Satan was already working against us. Joel reminded us about keeping God first and making the week about glorifying God in everything we do. Before we left the crew got a group picture taken by parents and fellow youth leaders. We were on the road by 6:40. After crossing over the Bay Bridge, we took a pit stop and switched cars. Everyone arrived to the jobsites, had lunch, and then split up into work groups. Joel’s group included Bryan, Tori, Sarah, and Erin. They removed the deck boards in the back at Ms. Powell’s house. They also dug out support posts of the deck to get ready for concrete tomorrow. The rest of us stayed at the Delcid-Athey homes. At the Delcid home, one crew started digging the trenches for the wheelchair ramp. The Athey crew tore down and cleaned out under the deck. Janet and Melissa had a crew sorting the lumber out for the deck and the ramp. We arrived at the campsite at 3. We received our tent assignments and set up camp. The group set up 10 tents total. After set up, we unloaded the trailer and got our things set up for the week. Mt. Zion UMC made dinner for us. We had hotdogs, mac and cheese, fruit cups, chips, salad, etc. We finished with dinner and had some free time before vespers (Camp Joy’s nightly worship service). The youth group that was in charge of vespers did a skit reminding us to keep God first. (Starting to notice a theme??) Then when vespers was over we came back and got cleaned up. Joe and Adham set up electric for all of the tents and Lil’ Shawn (we are blessed with incoming senior Sean Irwin and incoming  8th grader Shawn Kelley so we have given the younger Shawn a nick name to keep them straight!)was the designated tree climber to help with this project. All in all today was a great day! God is good!!!  Well, the group has to get to bed now. Up and “Adham” at 6am! Going to continue the update tomorrow around the same time.

P.S. Big thunderstorm last night(Sun)….tents seemed to stay relatively dry….off to work we go
